One of those was in Massachusetts out near Boston and the other was in New Orleans. I found this rather interesting reading so I thought I would share it with the rest of you. He purchased the car in 73 and is the second owner. In the November 78 issue there is a letter from Ken Edgerton stating he owns a 69 T/A convertible with VIN 223679N104808. This is the #2 T/A convertible with a Parchment interior that is currently owned by D. The editor confirmed that it was a T/A convertible. At the time it was stored in his buddies barn, but he supplied the VIN 223679N104810 and asked the editor if it could be one of the two 69 T/A convertibles. He had been told that there was no such thing as a Trans Am convertible so he thought it was just a Firebird. In the August 78 issue Ted Gallas wrote in saying he had purchased a 69 Firebird convertible several years earlier with a big block Chevy engine in it that looked just like the one pictured in the article except it was a convertible. Ironically, in that era the Trans Am never won a race in the series for which it was named. The Trans Am moniker was controversial in-as-much as the SCCA never approved it - until GM agreed to pay a $5 per car royalty. The hood had functional air intakes and fender scoops served to vent heat from the engine bay. It was a little-publicized $725 option package all 689 coupes and eight convertibles were dressed in Polar White with blue racing stripes, rear spoiler, and decals. SCCA road racing had become popular and the Detroit manufacturers all backed factory teams in the Trans Am series that formed in 1966. Pontiac's new-found performance focus continued through the 1960s. He eliminated the venerable 'suspenders' (a styling cue since 1935) and supported motorsports. By 1953 Pontiac was producing a half million cars annually when stodgy designs torpedoed sales and Semon 'Bunkie' Knudsen was brought in to breathe new life into the beleaguered brand.
